About Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill is a town in the Regional Municipality of York, Ontario, Canada. It is part of the Greater Toronto Area and Golden Horseshoe. Richmond Hill was named after Richmond Road which is a stretch of road in London, England that runs from Ealing Common to Putney Heath in south London and hence the name “Richmond” means “rich meadow”. The area where this now begins was once covered with heathland and marshes, but these were drained during the middle decades of the 20th century for agricultural use.

The first European settlers came from York County (now Durham Region), England in 1793-1794 and established farming operations along what is now Yonge Street. In 1801, the “Eglington” or “Eglinton” family (of which Sir Eglinton Mitchell was a descendant) – owners of extensive lands in Toronto Township and owners of the Eglinton Flour Mills at Elmwood, Nova Scotia) purchased 100,000 acres in what is now the Township. They subsequently built mills at Lloydtown and converted the former Eglington home into “Eglington Hall”.
